Meet Jimmy

Jimmy was born September 25, 1935 in Rose Hill, Virginia to the late James Bales and Ruth Robinette. Jimmy received his BA degree from Columbia College in 1960 (the government allowed veterans to attend Columbia College after the Korean War for a number of years). In 1966 Jimmy received his MA degree from East Tennessee State and in 1975 his Ed. D. from the University of South Carolina. Jimmy is a retired educator of 33 years having served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal (Lower Richland High School), and director of career education (Richland District One). Other jobs (past and present) include a probation officer for Richland County Family Court (1960-63), a residential home builder since 1963, and a farmer since 1965. Jimmy continues to dabble in farming and presently has cows on his farm in Eastover.


Jimmy was married to the late Violet Jo Burgner (1951-1982) and had 2 children (Richard and Deborah). December 2, 1993 Jimmy married Helen (Lynn) Elizabeth Armstrong who had 2 children (Kevin and Kris). Together Jimmy and Lynn have 1 child (Kristen) making a grand total of five children, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.

BIPEC went on to say “Your legislative endeavors have resulted in the creation of jobs and a higher standard of living for South Carolinians.”

South Carolina Good Government Committee

The South Carolina Good Government Committee is an independent, non-partisan, organization affiliated with the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce. After analyzing Jimmy’s voting record, they stated that Jimmy has a strong “advocacy for economic development.” They stated “With your continued leadership, we can make South Carolina the best place in the world to live, work, and do business.”
